Survey work has begun on three projects to extend Rapid City’s bike trails: one along Rapid Creek at Founders Park, one to connect the bike path with SDSM&T, and one that will take the path around the Central States Fairgrounds.
Federal funding for improvements to the greenway provided $1.8 million for the three projects. State DOT surveyors were working on a bridge site near Founders Park in early March.
According to Jerry Cole, Director of the Rapid City Parks and Recreation Department, long range plans include bike connections all over the city, connecting to Anamosa, School of Mines, and eventually to the north side of I-90 providing an entire loop around the city. Cole said a private group is even exploring the potential for a “Rails to Trails” connection from the city to the airport via an abandoned rail bed.
