Walkers and Bikers Hear about Master Plan

Members of a team beginning development of a Master Plan for Pedestrian and Bike Paths in Rapid City explained their approach and listened to comments from interested people at a an information session hosted by Friends of Rapid City Parks.

Ann Friewald and Hannah Kapell of Alta Planning + Design, and local planner Mike Bender told a group of 20 bicycle enthusiasts about their approach to develop a plan for the Metropolitan Planning Organization by the end of the year. They described the firm’s experience and philosophy, which emphasizes connectivity, a city-wide network, and convenient access to routes that will serve for all levels of cyclists, from bicycle commuters to weekend recreationists, and pedestrians.

Founders Park

Founders Park Slated for Changes

Additions to portions of the bike trail within the park along Rapid Creek are on the city docket as well as the master planning underway for areas outside the park.

Preliminary designs for trail extensions to SDSM&T and the Central States Fairgrounds will be ready for public meetings some time in July, with a projected early fall decision by the City Council.

40th Annual City Wide Clean Up Day Needs YOU

Join Friends of Rapid City Parks and dozens of your friends and neighbors in spiffing up public areas in our parks, along Rapid Creek, and on our busiest streets.

The Mayor’s office reports that this year, the 40th annual event—coinciding with the 40th anniversary of Earth Day—is drawing volunteers from organizations and groups who have never participated before.

Meet at the corner of Omaha and LaCrosse. We’ll be cleaning an area along the creek South of Omaha Street off Racine Street, shown on this map as areas 5-6, 5-7, 5-18 and 5-19. Bring your gloves, we’ll have trash bags. From noon to 4 p.m. Saturday, April 24. What better way to celebrate Earth Day?
